Aerospace Parts Manufacturers Leading the Way
Contributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Other Resources
Aerospace parts companies all over the world are making contributions as the coronavirus spreads.
Teams from across the aerospace parts manufacturing industry have come forward to contribute lifesaving medical supplies and other support as the novel coronavirus continues to spread. For example, Airbus is currently modifying both A330 and A350 aircraft to allow for more freight after the removal of economy class seating. This adjustment will facilitate the delivery of medical supplies and other support all over the world.
Lockheed Martin is another powerhouse contributing to the cause. The company has produced more than 55,000 gowns and more than 28,000 face shields for medical care providers. The corporation has also partnered with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) in ensuring rapid bone marrow transfer all over the world as medical teams adapt to the pandemic.
NASA is also working to combat the shortage of medical supplies as the coronavirus spreads. In fact, Administration engineers have designed a COVID-19-specific ventilator. VITAL (Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally) is currently in the FDA review process.
Current Opportunities and Advances
Despite the unprecedented circumstances, there are still numerous opportunities across the aerospace manufacturing industry. In addition to freight adjustments, Airbus has opened production headquarters for both A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft in Mobile, Alabama. This facility will accommodate the production of JetBlue’s first A220 aircraft.
NASA has awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman for the design of the habitation and logistics outpost (HALO) for the lunar Gateway, as part of the Administration’s Artemis program. The module will house a crew and provide a docking station for spacecraft that travel between the Earth and the moon.
The U.S. Navy has also granted contracts to Vertex Aerospace and Boeing. Vertex will provide maintenance and various technologies and components for USN C-26 Aircraft. Boeing is set to support foreign military sales (FMS) through Harpoon and Standoff Land Attack Missile Extended Response (SLAM ER) systems.
